Why Study Abroad?
Why Study Abroad?
Choosing to study abroad is not an easy decision to make. Leaving behind your family and friends? Thrusting yourself into the midst of a whole new environment that you might or might not be able to adapt to? Many obstacles would likely present themselves to you whenever the thought resurfaces, but you have to wonder why globalization has become such a popular phenomenon today. Why is it that numerous students seek education in other countries and willfully engage in what you might (initially) believe to be a hassle? If you’re still wondering all those things, then here are the top reasons as to why you should consider studying abroad:
This is the primary reason why numerous students around the world pack their bags and head off in pursuit of a foreign college degree. Not all countries are able to provide students with the same opportunities or high-quality learning facilities as others; each country has a different curriculum and teaching style, and so by choosing to study abroad, not only are you getting a chance to learn things differently, you’re also guaranteeing yourself the best possible college education you can get, from accredited and top-ranking universities.
**Self-growth and independence**
A great way to marvelously push yourself out of your comfort zone and experience the feeling of independence is to travel to and study in a completely different environment. Living abroad requires a huge amount of responsibility and maturity, and is a great way to nurture such feelings. You will immerse yourself in a process where you discover your surroundings and your own self, and you will get the chance to challenge yourself not only academically, but emotionally as well!
Aside from independence, communication is yet another fundamental skill that you will gain out of your journey of traveling abroad. One of the advantages of studying abroad is the culture diversity you get to experience. You will get to interact with numerous different people, who come from different backgrounds, and while you interact with them, you will gain an insight into their cultures and regard yours from a different perspective. You will thus master what is called “cross-cultural communication”.
**Enhanced career opportunities**
Learning a new language is not the only valuable addition to your resume when it comes to studying abroad! The experience itself serves as a great addition! Employers always look for people who express a high level of adaptability, willingness to develop, and independence. Therefore, knowing that you have international experience and was subjected to some form of international education will immediately add you to their preference list. In a study done by IES abroad, researchers concluded that “90% of study abroad alumni found their first job within six months of graduating.” (Glebe, 2019).
**Experiencing a different culture**
I’m sure you’re well-aware that people don’t typically eat, say, Koshari in the Netherlands, but this leads to an especially important set of questions: What do they eat? What kind of music do they listen to? What style of weddings do they have? What places are they most famous for? Are they museums? Gardens? Waterfalls? Such questions can be answered in two ways; you could just find the answer through a Google search, but do you know what’s vastly more fun? Finding out yourself! Hands-on and in-person!
These are only some of the reasons as to why you should consider traveling and studying abroad, but the potential benefits surely do not end at that! Don’t stop yourself from taking a _bright_ step into your _future_ and engaging in a life-changing experience that would add lots to your personality (and inevitably, your resume). Leave all your doubts behind and fly as far as you can!
