Engineering Majors – A Comprehensive Overview:

Becoming an engineer is no easy task, especially considering the high minimum grade-requirements and fierce competition required just to get accepted into a notable institution. And yet another hurdle aspiring engineers must overcome is figuring out what field they want to specialize in, i.e what major to pick. Today, we’ll be giving a short overview of the 10 core Engineering majors, along with what you should expect to learn from them and what careers they could land you in.

1. Aerospace Engineering

Studies & Skills: As an Aerospace major, expect to delve deep into the world of physics. Your syllabus will include topics such as: Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Aircraft Design, Spaceflight Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Propulsion. You’ll also develop necessary quick-thinking, crisis-management, and risk-management skills.
Career Prospects: Aerospace majors can find work as engineers at NASA, Boeing, or just about any aircraft manufacturer and airport. But the opportunities don’t stop there; Aerospace majors can go on to become Consultants, Manufacturing engineers, Aeronautical designers, or even Production managers.

2. Civil Engineering

Studies & Skills: As a Civil Engineering major, expect to learn a lot about geology, structures, and local building codes and regulations. Your syllabus will include topics such as: Fluid mechanics, Soil mechanics, Environment building, Architectural engineering, Geomechanics, and Structural mechanics. You’ll also learn communication, leadership. organizational, and project-management skills.

Career Prospects: Civil Engineering majors can go on to become Structural, Geotechnical, Environmental, Construction, or Site engineers. You can also become a Risk assessor or Patent attorney if you have enough knowledge of the local codes & regulations and have sufficient industry experience.

3. Chemical Engineering

Studies & Skills: The average Chemical engineering syllabus includes: Separation processes, Thermodynamics, Petroleum engineering, Data analysis, Fluid mechanics, Industrial chemistry, Environmental management, and Cell biology. A good Chemical engineer must also develop competent presentation, computer, analytical, negotiation skills, and problem-solving skills.

Career Prospects: A Chemical engineering major has a wide variety of career options to choose from, and that’s not counting the number of different higher education paths they can take. Some such careers include: Analytical chemistry, Energy management, Environmental engineering, Petroleum engineering, Renewable energy, Nuclear engineering, and Biotechnology.

4. Biomedical Engineering

Studies & Skills: As a Biomedical engineering major, you’ll likely study subjects such as: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Life sciences, Material sciences, Biomechanics, Human anatomy & physiology, and Medical informatics. You’ll also obtain careful measurement and analytical skills, good attention to detail & design, and the ability to turn designs and concept work into mass-production products.

Career Prospects: Aside from becoming a regular old Biomedical engineer, students can become a Biomaterials developer, Independent consultant, Biomedical researcher, Rehabilitation engineer, Medical technology developer, or even, with further study of course, a Doctor.

5. Industrial Engineering

Studies & Skills: Industrial engineering may seem like a strange choice for some, but it’s actually a very unique major, especially considering the fact that a lot of what you’ll study isn’t scientific or mathematical in nature at all! You’ll be taking classes on subjects such as: Production & Operations planning, International production & operation management, Materials handling, and Logistics.

Career Prospects: An Industrial engineering degree provides you with wide, varied set of skills, allowing you to work both technical and managerial fields such as: Process engineering, Supply chain management, Automation engineering, Wholesale trading, Research & development, Consulting, and the Service industry.
